Episode “Frodo”

Frodo: At least a couple times a day you know, they will let us get up and walk around. I like that to you know because getting out and being able to walk and run even though it is hot out, it is still good to get out and stretch your legs, all four of them.
Oh my name is Frodo and I'm five years old. I have been at the shelter for a year at this one and before that I was at and other for eight months. I am an older dog too; I have been around for awhile so I know how this goes. Yet I haven't actually always been in the shelter, I came from a pretty large family and we got separated. We went to different homes and the last home that I went to I didn't really get along too well with two of the children.
So they decided to take me to the last shelter that I was in. I had no idea how it would be, I thought given the fact that I was younger then, I thought for sure someone would come in the first week or so and just take me. But I'm a big dog and I think that intimidates some people. I like getting out of the kennel and being able to run and roll around in the grass. I love being able to do that. If there is a Frisbee handy I like those.
I am not as spry at some of the little dogs, but I can hold my own. Sometimes you just have to let the other guys know you're not intimidated by them as well. I like the fact that they give me so much of my own space. I absolutely love my igloo. I guess it is like a safe place, you know what I mean? It’s nice.
Obviously I like company as well, but if I don’t have it I am ok with it. That is one of the problems I have being here, is that people are quick to prejudge you just because of your stature or your size. It gets me because most people don't realize really how goofy I am. You can ask any of the caretakers here, you know.
Have fun together we go for runs and we play for a little while. But I guess my appearance especially with women for some reason; they find me unapproachable which is the word they used, and I was like wow okay well I mean there's nothing I can do about it. You have to want to know me I guess.
I'm hoping to eventually have a family that says; hey you know we want that big chow. We like that dog. He is cool. Sometimes it just clicks. I had a friend that was in the next kennel from me, and they saw him and the kids just clicked. They just loved him and the next day I was by myself again. But like I said I am used to that now.
I guess that comes with age after five years I think I am the mature type. I try to stay positive too, to keep a positive attitude. You know I don't mind being the oldest dog around. You know I think there will come a time when someone comes in and they are not just looking for a newborn pup. You know they want a dog that can take care of them.
Maybe a small or petite woman will come in and say “Hey I need some kind of protection” you know? And I know I would be good at that, protecting. I'm thinking it's going to happen soon. I have been here for a year and I think the right person is going to walk through, and they are going to know and I'm going to know we are going to leave here together. And I know it's going to happen soon. Well I think so anyway.

Episode “Holiday”

Holiday: When the water hits you its so cold and you just all of a sudden tense up. Eventually I am going to get used to it. But right now it is a learning process.
My name is Holiday; I am about two months old. It is all kind of a big blur. I was with a bunch of my other brothers and sisters and then one day it was just me and my other brother. Yeah, he is two minutes younger than me. Yeah, the minute he got out he kind of looked at me like and like who are you? And I was like, well I am the boss. From then on it has been a constant, constant little power struggle. It never starts as a fight, its always just playing and you know were having a good time and then all of a sudden you know, somebody crosses the line. You know we can get a little intense, in the heat of the moment. Yeah that can happen, we are brothers, its family, you know.
My mom was one of the sweetest, most caring individuals I have ever met in my life. I think one thing I will want to make sure that never happens is that I don’t forget her. I don’t want to forget what she looks like. I don’t want to ever forget what she sounds like, or the things that she told me. She did a great job of getting us prepared for our next phase in life. Which is right now at the shelter and then you know, hopefully with a family.
Shelters can be kind of scary. Its ok, it’s not the best. It is not the ideal situation but it is the life of a dog. It is something I am still getting used to, because I haven’t gone through this much. When these people walk by, I see people walking by all day and they take care of us.
I am thinking wow; there is a lot more people here to take care of us. But that was kind of, that’s when I started learning this is what’s happening. This is what’s going on. They are coming here to pick one of us to go with them and start a new family. Each person is different and you have to gauge them that way.
When I see a little kid, I will go up to them and I will sniff there hand, I will try to lick on them and I will look up at them, and you know I just try to communicate to them that I will love you to the day that I die. And I will the best friend that you could possibly ever have. You know my little brother tries to climb all over me and tries to push me to the background. But you know the cream always rises to the top.
I don’t think any dog ever looks for a short term relationship. I need someone to take care of me. What I want from a family is for them to love me, for them to support me, to accept me even with my mistakes. I am not going to keep making them again, and again. But I am going to make mistakes. After all I am not perfect.
But I would like to really be with a family that understands my nature, understands that as young as I am, I have a lot of energy. I need people who are going to pay attention to me. I don’t want to be constantly left alone. And you know, just to give me a lot of support and a lot of love. Because that’s what I think everybody looks for in a family. I think that’s what a family id there for, to love you unconditionally and to support you unconditionally. You know, there's good days there's bad days, you know.
But in those times I will just kind of daydream. I will think about my mom, I will think about how my brothers and sisters are. Make up these stories about what their doing right now. Or what adventures they are getting into. I think it would be great if my brother and I could actually go to the same home. I think it would be great to grow up with them. Because that’s a luxury a lot of us dogs don’t get.
As much as a tease about my younger brother I love him very much. He is my brother, he is my family. And as much as he may goad me and as much as he may play up on me. The point is he is still looking towards me for guidance. That is the hardest part about being in a shelter, is when I am not by my brother, is being in a cage by myself. And it’s not bad, it’s just hard, you know, hey I am sitting around, looking around, TV would be nice.

<media:text type="html"><![CDATA[Sheltered
Episode “Velvet”

Velvet: I know my mom was red, and my dad was white, but aside from that I don’t know my mom and dads names. And I don’t know who they are. But you know cats have short-term memory, so I don’t really think about my mom that much.

My name is Velvet and I am ten weeks old, unfortunately our owners couldn’t find any parents for us. They had to collect all our brothers and sisters and put us all in a box to drop us off at the shelter. It was somewhat claustrophobic because there were nine of us total in the box. And we didn’t know how long we had to be in there and we didn’t have food. It was just dark and hot and sad, because we didn’t know where we were going.

Well the morning after we were dropped off a really nice lady pulled off the top of the box and we saw the light of day. And we knew there was hope. I had been in the shelter probably about a week and a half now. I love it. There are so many toys and plenty of room for us to scale the walls and climb the cat tower, fight and wrestle and push each other around and play like we are supposed to play when we are kittens.

The hardest thing about being in a shelter is people coming in and out all the time, all day everyday. And you know that they are there because they want to take a cat home. But you never know who they are going to take. And as much as you want it to be you, you also want to go with the perfect owner. So just as much as they are testing us, they are testing us too.

You know sometimes when you know that’s not really the people you want to go home with you have to hide. I like hiding; I am kind of shy. I like to be by myself and you know when we are in this type of atmosphere there is really, you know you don’t get your own room, I am not that spoiled.

I love napping, but I feel… You know I think about the time that I have and the time that a nap would take and what I could do during that time. So I usually give myself a guilt trip. I probably spend a quarter of my day thinking about food or eating. I love food so much that it is probably bad, a bad thing. Because I probably eat more than I exercise, and I am afraid I might get fat.

So if I could have any wish it would be that I got to live in the kitchen of a four star restaurant. You never know where you are going to end up and you never know what your life is going to be like tomorrow. And so you just have to be an optimist and you have to think of things a wish a lot of things. And just go to sleep knowing that tomorrow is another day.

What I am looking for in a person is someone who loves me as much as I love them. And cares about me, and spoils me and thinks about me all the time, wants to be with me all the time, and wants to love me all the time. I don’t think I am asking too much, but I have high expectations, what can I say.

I think I have a lot to offer to a person. I am very compassionate, I love to cuddle, I am just happy, and it’s just contagious. And to see someone sad and to be able to turn that frown upside down there is nothing like it in the world. And just to know that I was able to fix someone or fix something in someone’s life. There is nothing better for me. As much as I want to be loved, I want to find somebody to love too. I think that that person exists.

Episode “Sweetie”

Sweetie: Ideally I would like to live somewhere where it’s not so hot, because it is really hot here. My name is Sweetie, well that is the name they gave me; I don’t know really what my name is. When people talk about shelters and you know other dogs, they are like oh yeah the shelter. And I always imagine it’s this like cold place that is all cement. You know concrete everywhere. This place is very natural. There is lots of grass and trees and I can look out over a field. I think probably dogs that are in the city don’t have that.
So I feel like I am lucky. If this is the place I have to stay while I am waiting to be adopted then I feel like that’s ok. It is a little scary sometimes because the other dogs are really loud. I am not a real barker; it’s not in my nature.
Yeah we have our cages that we stay in and there ok. I mean it kind of smells, but everything smells when you are a dog. My preference as far as cages, and I think I speak for lots of the dogs here is to be able to go outside most of the time, because inside not too much changes. When your inside you have the same things you are looking at all the time and the same dogs are barking.
When you go outside there's always something different. There is always something different to smell, there is always the dogs that are in the other cages that are outside are doing different things. And that is interesting. It’s something different. When you’re in a place like this anything different is good.
When someone comes to visit, it is really stressful. And it is stressful for many reasons, and one of them is because this is a stranger. So as a dog your first instinct is not to love everybody you come in contact with. Your first instinct is to really be sort of weary of them until you can kind of sniff them out and figure out if their good people. But on the other hand you want to get adopted and you only have a 2 second window as they are passing your cage to make a good impression and it stresses me out because I don’t know in those 2 seconds if it is the right thing to do.
You don’t know you don’t know what kind of dog they are looking for. I mean you can’t change their mind either, if their going there for a poodle, they are going to get a poodle. They are not going to change their mind and pick me. But I am new here so what do I know. I don’t know sometimes I feel like I am an ambassador for other dogs, especially formerly homeless dogs, who may not have a good reputation.
My favorite thing about the shelter, is the people that work there. Because no matter who comes to see you, you know like visitors and kids and people who may or may not adopt you the people that work there are always happy to see you. It’s always nice to see somebody coming to your cage that knows your story that knows who you are, and treats you well.
I think the ideal person for me is someone who likes to run around, somebody who is active but isn’t like obsessed with it. But I think mostly I just want somebody that will think of me as you know, as their friend or sister. I think that’s something I miss. I don’t know, I just want somebody to be my friend.
