Episode "Tinfoil"

Nadia: Does crinkled aluminum foil work in baking?
Tali: Can you cook a grilled cheese sandwich wrapped in foil only with an iron?
Nadia: We will tell you what works for us.
Tali: And what gets foiled!
Nadia: Here we go again.
Tali: Its try this at home.
Tali: Foil was first created in the late 1800's and originally made of tin.
Nadia: But aluminum foil was created in 1910 in Switzerland.
Tali: The stuff is so useful that no one can imagine not having it around to cover up some food.
Nadia: Cook a bake potato.
Tali: Or to keep aliens from taking control of our brains.
Nadia: While we are waiting on the mother ship, let’s test some tips. The current world record for the worlds largest foil ball is 1,615 pounds. When I make potatoes I like to bake them in the oven instead of frying them on the stove. What I do is put them on a cookie sheet on aluminum foil, but the thing is they end to stick. And so what I heard is that if you out aluminum foil on the cookie sheet and crinkle it instead of flat, that it will aid in baking and keep the potatoes from sticking. So what I have done is I have covered my cookie sheet, with a flat side and a crinkly side. And we are going to see which one works best.
Wow it worked, the crinkle side didn’t stick as much, and they are very well cooked. and the flat side is over cooked and they definitely stuck, so I will be doing this again in the future.
Tali: I love painting, but it just always gets so messy and you end up having to throw everything away. well next time you paint try wrapping your tray in aluminum foil. Then when your done just pour out the excess paint, let what’s left dry, then just peel off the foil, throw it away and now you can user the tray a second time.
Nadia: Here is a cool tip that we are going to test out next, when you go to a hotel bring along a cheese sandwich wrapped in aluminum foil.
Tali: Be sure to put butter on the outside of the bread to make it extra tasty.
Nadia: Put it on the ironing board and put your iron on the highest setting, dry no steam.
Tali: Then you are supposed to put the iron right down on the aluminum foil for 30 seconds on either side.
Nadia: They say it is supposed to be really good, so we will see.
Tali: Let’s try it out.
Nadia: Go ahead.
Tali: Alright so it’s been about a minute.
Nadia: I can smell it, I think its ready it smells good.
Tali: Do you think it’s going to work?
Nadia: I hope so.
Tali: Whew, that looks really good.
Nadia: Really because I am disappointed, it should be much toastier.
Tali: It’s melted.
Nadia: Yeah that’s right, and it does seem to be done on one side, but it’s kind of soggy.
Tali: Well, let’s not waste any food.
Nadia: Yeah let’s try it.
Tali: Alright.
Nadia: Well, I am sorry I am not giving up my skillet; it’s just not good enough.
Tali: I might try it again, If I am at a hotel and don’t have anything else to eat.
Nadia: Well I think we both agree if you’re going to try this at home you should definitely cook it for longer than 30 seconds on both sides.
Tali: This stuff is like duct tape.
Nadia: Only shinier and less sticky.
Tali: I wonder if you could use a small foil ball to clean a dirty pot or pan?
Nadia: Well we are out of time, but maybe someone out there can try it and let us know.
Tali: Thanks for dropping by.
Nadia: And when you can, try this at home.

Episode “Lemon”

Tali: Can you use a lemon to clean out your microwave?
Nadia: What I want to know is can you really clean the fish smell out of a cutting board with a lemon?
Tali: Stick around we are going to squeeze the truth out.
Nadia: I know you did not just say that.
Tali: Oh yeah I did. Pucker up.
Nadia: Its try this at home.
So we did some research.
Tali: And the lemon was a lot more interesting than we thought.
Nadia: Mongols invented lemonade around the end of the thirteenth century.
Tali: Then the lemon traveled from Asia Minor onto Greece and Italy.
Nadia: Who knew the lemon was such a world traveler.
Tali: Or that it has so many uses to.
Nadia: and we are going to put those uses to the test.
Tali: The largest lemon ever grown was eight pounds, eight ounces. A lot larger than this one.
Nadia: If you are like me and you sometimes forget to cover up pasta sauce when you heat it up in the microwave, you can end up with a really big mess. Now I have always heard that you can put lemon in the microwave to make it easier to clean. But I have my doubts, so I am going to try it. What I did was I filled a microwave safe bowl about halfway with water. And filled it up with lemon wedges. And I am going to heat it up in the microwave for about 2 or 3 minutes until I get a nice rolling boil.
So we will see. Alright it has been a couple of minutes, the water has been boiling. And I should just be able to open the microwave and wipe it down with a damp cloth. It smells really good in here because of the lemon, so I hope it worked, we will see. Wow, it actually works, it looks like lemon in your microwave does a pretty good job. And at least you’re not using chemicals I a place where you put your food.
Tali: Need a little bit of juice and don’t want to waste a whole lemon? Poke a hole in the lemon, squirt out the juice, and cover it with a band aid. Put it the fridge, and now it will last longer than if you cut it in half.
Nadia: So here is a tip that we both thought was a little fishy. Supposedly if you rub cutting board right before you wash it, it will take out the smell of fish.
Tali: So we tossed a coin.
Nadia: And I get to rub a cutting board with fish,
Tali: And I get to smell it afterwards.
Nadia: Yeah, who won this one?
Tali: I don’t think I did.
Nadia: Ok, so I rubbed both of these identical cutting boards with fish. And I am about to rub one of them with a piece of lemon. And then I will wash both of them and see if Tali can tell the difference. Ok so we have two freshly washed cutting boards, and we are going to see if Tali can tell the difference. So here is cutting board A. Smell.
Tali: Smells pretty clean to me.
Nadia: And here is cutting board B.
Tali: That doesn’t smell very clean to me.
Nadia: Wow, that didn’t work at all. It seemed to make it even worse. So it seems like your pretty safe using regular old dish soap.
So that was really interesting, and there is tons more stuff you can do with lemons.
Tali: Yeah like can you use a lemon to clean a grass stain off a shirt?
Nadia: I don’t know. That’s something you should totally try at home. Keep it coming.

Episode: “Coffee”

Tali: Can you get onion stink off your hands by rubbing coffee beans on them?
Nadia: And can you really clean your nasty coffee grinder with rice?
Tali: Double roasted fast brewed.
Nadia: Two sugars, two creams.
Tali: Try this.
Nadia: At home.
Tali: Coffee has a rich b old history.
Nadia: Textures and flavors almost as aromatic as the bean itself.
Tali: America's love affair with coffee dates all the way back to the Boston tea party.
Nadia: A revolt against the British left a decrease in tea import.
Tali: And an increase in coffee imports.
Nadia: Caffeine, hey what can you say.
Tali: Get your fix when you can.
Nadia: Drip, French press, or instant.
Tali: Cappuccinos, espressos and Americano’s, coffee is king in the USA.
Nadia: So let's get brewing.
Tali: Read this at home the coffee trader by David list fictionalizes the beginning of the coffee market in 17th-century Amsterdam.
Nadia: I drink a lot of coffee and my coffee grinder is always really nasty. I've been searching for a good way to clean it up and recently came across a tip I wanted to test. What you do is take some rice and fill up the grinder to about the level of the blade, and then just power away. Not only should clean out all that nasty gunk inside. It is supposed to do double duty and sharpen up the blades too. Let's see if it works. Wow it actually worked. It only took a matter of seconds and the rice to the really good job of getting all the nasty gunk out of the inside of the grinder. All I would have to do is just wipe it with a damp cloth and then I would be good to go. Definitely got to try this again.
Tali: If you are opening a bottle of one and you accidentally break the court and some of it goes inside the bottle. You will need to strain the cork bits out and the best way to do that as with a coffee filter. Now you can enjoy your cork free wine.
Nadia: I hate cutting onions because I can never get the smell off my hands I heard if you take coffee beans and rub them in between your hands after cutting a onion it is supposed to get the smell out. What I'm going to do is rub a onion in between my hands, and then stick one hand into a bowl of coffee beans. And then use my other hand as a control, then I'm going to watch both hands and see if Nadia can smell a difference. Hey want to smell my hands?
Tali: Sure.
Nadia: OK what does the smell like?
Tali: It smells clean it smells like soap.
Nadia: Okay now this one.
Tali: It smells like coffee beans.
Nadia: I guess it kind of worked, while the smell of coffee stuck to one hand, the soap I used on the other seems to work just as well. I don't think I'm going to waste my coffee beans on this one again. Is it is it just me or did I go by awfully fast.
Tali: I don't know think it is just you, I think it is the caffeine.
Nadia: I wish we would have tested to see if you could use coffee grounds to keep cats out of your garden.
Tali: Yeah I don't know hopefully someone will try the home and let us know.
Nadia: I think I need a refill.
Tali: How about some decaf?

<media:text type="html"><![CDATA[Try this at home
Episode "Wine"

Tali: Can you use apple juice instead of white wine to cook?
Nadia: And can you sue white wine to get out a red wine stain? Will that work?
Tali: We will define the truth.
Nadia: And let you know if you should...
Tali: Try this at home.
Nadia: Well this is going to be my favorite episode ever!
Tali: You got that right.
Nadia: Apparently the oldest wine came from Iran.
Tali: Then the Chinese discovered it on there own a few thousand years later.
Nadia: Must have been a boring few thousand years.
Tali: That’s for sure.
Nadia: Well, its time to get tipsy. The worlds oldest bottle of wine was found in a roman sarcophagus and dates back to 325 a.d. the contents were still preserved when it was discovered over 1500 years later.
Tali: I love to cook and many of the recipes I enjoy most call for wine. but sometimes I run out. A friend of mine recently told me that you could substitute unsweetened apple juice for white wine in a recipe. While I am really skeptical, I decided I would try it out. I am going to make my version of chicken picatta and cook one piece of chicken in the white wine sauce like I normally do, and then the other piece of chicken using apple juice. Then we are going to let Nadia taste them both and see if she can taste the difference. Ok, let’s see if you can taste the difference.
Nadia: Well I think I can say with certainty that the first one was the apple juice because it was much sweeter than the second one. And I am sorry to say that there is a difference but it nominal. You know, like they still tasted really good, both of them.
Tali: Well she was right; the first piece of chicken is the one that I cooked in the apple juice. but even though she tasted the difference they both tasted great. So while I wasn’t sure at first, this is definitely a tip I am going to use again.
If you have left over wine, pour it into a ice cube tray and stick it in the freezer, then next time you have a recipe that calls for some wine, pop out a couple of cubes and your ready to go.
Nadia: Sometimes parties can get a little wild and dealing with the aftermath can be a bit daunting. Such as red wine stains. now I have heard that you can pour white wine on a red wine stain and that will somehow get it out. I am really skeptical of that so we are going to see. well, now I have a red wine stain and a white wine stain, I had my suspicions and they were confirmed. you can’t get red wine out of a shirt with red wine so you are better off saving your wine and your time and not using this tip at all.
Nadia: Alright, alright.
Tali: I think we are done here.
Nadia: And we didn’t even get a chance to talk about all the cool things you can do with wine bottles and corks.
Tali: Hey, but that’s alright we can’t complain we got to drink on the job.
Nadia: And that’s something you can always try at home.
