Salon Tipping

Don't look like a cheap skate next time you're at the salon, listen to Proper Ollie. There are a variety of services you can receive at salons: manicures, waxes, coloring, and a normal cut. Be sure and brush up on the appropriate gratuity for each of these in this week's etiquette head's up.

Tipping,as the British Economist magazine has written, is a form of corruption. You don't tip in first world countries such as Australia and New Zealand, and you certainly don't tip in well-mannered Singapore. It appears America is a lost cause regarding this form of petty impropriety.

Thanks in afvance

Excellent. It's about time someone started teaching manners. How about some on table manners, please and thank you.

When a service person is selling - particularly unwanted products - that's call ed consultative selling but it is selling nevertheless. Standing firm about what you want can only be accomplished if you see it coming - that's called assertiveness.

Riverstone,

Thank you for the compliment.

Just because you agree to a service to shut someone up doesn't mean that you are off the hook to tip. That being said, you should never be bullied or guilted into a service you don't want.

If a service provider gets upset because you said No Thank You - visit another stylist the next time.

Very well done Ollie. Highly helpful, especially during those times where you get multiple services done. Like that fade from the perfume spray nozzle to the smiling bird... even better, classic head swing and use of the word "Proper" at the end.

Now, how much do you tip if the salon person keeps bothering you to get something extra done and you finally give in just to shut her up? Zero? Or would you use a verbal complaint instead? My wife would love to know this.
