Monk Life

Imagine giving up all your possessions, friends, and family. In a society that promotes the accrual of wealth and maintenance of image, this can be a difficult lifestyle for people to comprehend. To shed some light on this, Zen Living explores the life and work of a Buddhist monk living at an American monastery.

martaja-I disagree with your statement. Becoming a monk is not "like hiding yourself", rather, I think these monks are so devoted to the Buddhist philosophy that they truly want to detach themselves from the materialistic or "real world" as you call it and practice their teachings in its pure form. Also, Buddhism is the most simple of all the religions because of its lack of worship and dogma, but I agree it is the most difficult to practice-to want nothing and to be always mindful, easier said than done, that's why these monks are brave to devote themselves to this practice.

this is a very nice episode. thank you for bringing to us all this material.
from my own budhist practice i would disagree with few things from this episode. but of course there are many buddhist schools. become a monk is like hiding yourself from the real world. if we want to become strong we have to be able to fight with our desires, circumstancies, ect. that way we grow as a person. first budda Shakyamuni believed that we all have the buddha inside, it's in dormant state when not practising but wakes up when practise.it's difficult to accept that all people are buddhas, even your boss that causes you problem all the time ;) thats why it's so difficult to practice buddhism.
but it's so beautiful, beacuse you can learn a lot about yourself and your enviroment.

A great video; a great episode in the series!

You learn something new everyday, thank you for providing a brief insight into the lives of the Zen monks.

very interesting

This is one of my favorite episodes. I've never seen anything done like this on this topic. The temple is beautiful and so is the philosophy.

This is eye opening and very interesting. I've always had an interest in this topic but was overwhelmed by the info put out there. But this episode is easy to follow and understand and kept my interest. This monk is wonderful. Thanks!
